Colocasia dry curry- chembu mezhukkupuratti

Colocasia or chembu root is commonly used ingredient in Kerala traditional cuisines. The taste is similar to potatoes but contains more fiber.

Ingredients :


Chembu (Colocasia) ….1/4 Kg

Turmeric Powder…………. ¼ tablespoon

Chilly Powder……….. ½ tablespoon

Salt………….. As per Taste

Pepper Powder ……….1/4 tablespoon(optional)

Mustard Seeds ………………. ¼ tablespoon

Dry red Chilly ……………..1 Numbers

Curry leaves …………..1 Sprig

Coconut oil ……………….2 tablespoon

Preparation :


  1. Peel and Clean the Chembu and cut it into medium size cubes

  2. Cook chembu with salt and turmeric powder till it becomes tender.

  3. Drain the excess water and keep it aside.

  4. Heat oil and splutter Mustard seeds. Add Dry red chili and Curry leaves to the oil and fry.

  5. Now add the cooked Chembu pieces, chilly powder and salt (if needed)

  6. Shallow fry till golden brown in slow fire.

  7. Finally add Pepper powder.

  8. It should be golden brown and crispy outside but soft and tender inside


  9. Serve it hot with Sambar rice, Rasam rice or Curd rice
